Based on Signaling System 7 (SS7), Intelligent Networks (IN) and Advanced Intelligent Networks (AIN) have allowed for service creation and deployment to satisfy the changing needs of customers over the past few decades. Intelligent Networks (IN) distribute intelligence throughout the network, by taking functionality from telecommunications switches and placing it in computer nodes in the circuit switched network. Essentially this service-independent telecommunications network increases network management functions and allows for the more efficient control of information. In doing so, it enables operators to introduce new capabilities and services for customers. E.g. Local Number Portability (LNP), 800 service and calling card verification.

Intelligent Networks in more detail

Adax has a family of SS7 products that can be deployed in all the nodes throughout the Intelligent Network e.g. Service Switching Points (SSPs), Signal Transfer Points (STPs) and Service Control Points (SCPs), Home Location Register (HLR), Visitor Location Register (VLR), and Equipment Identity Register (EIR).

The channel control signaling messages in the Intelligent Network originate at the SSP (local exchange), which is a telephone switch that places or receives a call. To set up the call, the SSP sends an SS7 message to a connected STP (switching office). If the call-originating SSP knows how to route the call, it will ask the STP to create a connection to the receiving SSP. If the route is not known, the STP will contact a SCP (interface to databases), which has access to databases with call-routing information.

Redundant links are used between the nodes to minimise disruption to the service.

STPs and SCPs are often deployed in pairs and most SSPs are linked to two or more STPs to ensure a fault tolerant network.
