Adax Implements Classical IP over ATM for Telecom
Adax, industry leader in high performance wide area communications and signaling infrastructure, has announced support of Classical IP over ATM for its ATM boards. Support for Classical IP on the ATM cards, in accordance with RFC 2225, enables existing IP user content including voice and video to run in ATM networks and provides interoperability for these applications. Specifically, the Adax implementation enables the transmission of IP datagrams and Inverse ATM Address Resolution Protocol (InATMARP) requests and replies over ATM Adaptation Layer 5 (AAL5).
The new Adax Classical IP over ATM module runs with the existing Adax SS7 signaling over ATM, SSCOP and SSCF protocols and SCTP and M3UA for SIGTRAN on the same Adax ATM board. This enables existing IP applications for data, voice and video to run unaltered but at the same time take advantage of the higher capacity associated with fibre optic transmission. For instance, Classical IP over ATM can be used for transporting IP datagram traffic generated by GPRS or UMTS wireless networks from GGSN/ATM gateways to IP networks whilst SIGTRAN or SS7 controls the signaling .
Technical Description Two capabilities to support IP over ATM have been implemented onto the Adax boards: IP is encapsulated over AAL5 PVCs per RFC 2225 -- IEEE 802.2 LLC/SNAP encapsulation is the default packet format for IP datagrams carried over AAL5 ATM; IP Inverse Address Resolution and Discovery for ATM networks (InARP for ATM) is also implemented as per RFC 2225. The InATMARP is used to learn target IP addresses of the remote end based on VC (Virtual Channels) specified in the InATMARP_Request and InATMARP_Reply packets.
