SDCII - PMC
IP Signaling Controller Card

Overview

Designed specifically to meet the increased demands of IP convergence the SDCII-PMC is the newest addition to the Adax family of High- Performance protocol controller cards. The hardware assist features of the SDCII accelerate the performance of SCTP, SIP and IPsec and relieve the host from the crippling overhead associated with these applications. The SDCII-PMC card delivers high performance SCTP across four GigaBit Ethernet ports for high volume SIGTRAN and SIP applications. The Checksum Processing of outbound and inbound SCTP PDUs is taxing on the application CPU and can be attributable for up to 30% of the protocol overhead. Adax SCTP provides hardware assist for both Adler-32 and 32-bit CRC checksum so that the checksum computation is performed on each outbound and inbound PDU by the dedicated hardware on the SDCII board.

Hardware assist can also be used to implement IPsec, a set of IETF protocols that provide encryption services for IP network traffic to support the secure exchange of packets at the IP layer. The big advantage of IPsec is that the encryption services are transparent to the application but this places a large burden on the host processor affecting application performance. Implementing IPsec on the SDCII board removes the encryption and decryption overhead from the host and improves system performance.

The SDCII is the first card that allows operators and service providers to meet the processing demands of secure IP signaling and is designed for demanding telecommunications systems that have high capacity and high throughput requirements. The on-board processors perform many thousands of transactions per second, with minimal load on the host, maximizing the performance of the application for customers, without compromising reliability. This unique capability truly delivers on the promise of SIGTRAN cost savings. Pairing the SDCII with the Adax HDCIIPMC, ATMII-PMC and an SS7 stack on a cPCI or ATCA SBC, provides a complete SS7/IP gateway that offers one of the highest density, single slot solutions available on the market today. The SDCII-PMC is ideal for Signaling Gateways, Media Gateway Controllers, and SGSN, GGSN, MSC, HLR/VLR and BSS nodes in Next Generation Networks.

Application overview

The SDCII-PMC enables development flexibility in Next Generation infrastructure and can be configured in many ways, depending on customer specifications and preferred system architecture. This enables integrators to satisfy a wide range of requirements with a single common core architecture, saving development time and increasing the capability of customers to integrate their solutions ahead of the competition.

Two Adax PMC modules can be mounted on a carrier card with communication across the bus interface to the CPU or other PMC cards. Alternatively, they can be attached onto an SBC to create a self-contained environment, independent of the application. If the SBC is PICMG2.16 compliant, the solution is also bus independent, minimizing points of failure in the system. Mounting one or two Adax PMC modules onto a cPCI signaling blade, or four on an ATCA board, results in a powerful, scalable, high-density single slot solution for SS7, SIGTRAN or SS7/IP signaling. With the ability to run a signaling stack or gateway on one card, the signaling blade enables an extremely cost-effective solution for infrastructure developers in converged and Next Generation network environments.

Next Generation Network applications

The incredible performance of the Adax PMC cards and their ability to run high volumes of network traffic makes them perfect for narrowband, broadband, or IP signaling between 3G SGSNs and HLR/VLR and MSCs in the Core Network. The SDCII combined with the very high density (124 MTP2 links) of the HDCII-PMC card, delivers superb performance for large numbers of small transactions (as is common in Telecom transaction operations). This makes the pair particularly appropriate for SIGTRAN enabled HLRs that need to support an increasing number of subscribers over SS7 and IP.

Future proof Adax product family combination

The Adax SDCII-PMC allows for ease of application integration and migration due to the commonality between Adax industry standard C-based-APIs and customer applications. SS7-only solutions can be quickly and easily IP-enabled and migrated to broadband SS7 or SS7/IP networks with minimal changes to the higher layers. All of which protects the customer's signaling infrastructure investment and delivers a future proof solution.
